PAST
The existing small ones in Kalivari were installed back in the 1990s by the public power corporation (DEH) 1,7 MW installed capacity in total. In the past 10 years something of a completely unprecedented scale started unfolding.
Actually there is no such thing as an Andros wind farm project, this would imply that there has been some kind of central planning. In fact what is happening is the cumulative result of individual companies applying for permits wherever they thought more profits would be secured. Soon almost every cliff was reserved as a future industrial wind turbine installation site. We choose to use this term, industrial, because clusters of 100 metre tall steel giants can hardly be described as ‘farms’
Currently more than 100 such turbines have been given the permit to be installed all over the island and hundreds more are due to receive the final approval. (see map) Apart from the land owners of the actual sites, neither the neighboring property owners nor the public have been informed or asked their opinion. As a result of this lack of planning most protected areas or nature reserves are under threat of total or partial destruction by massive excavations in the order of millions of cubic meters.
PRESENT
Permanent alteration of the landscape and character of the island, a result of millenia of natural and cultural forces working in harmony, sculpting what we see, feel and love.
Irreversible loss of habitats and biodiversity.
Exclusion of all possibilities for Andros to develop in sustainable ways like the footpaths project has demonstrated.
Cultural division between the few who will financially benefit and the majority who will suffer.
